| The park is located in West Wichita
and contains a State "Wall" for the Vietnam vets, a Homefront
Memorial, a USN Armed Guard Memorial (the only one we know of), a Merchant
Marine Monument, a US Marine Corps Monument and more.
Engraving on the monument: Submarines made up less than 2% of the U.S. Naval Forces, yet they destroyed 50% of the Japanese shipping and more than 30% of the warships in the Japanese Navy. The SS-248 Dorado was on her way to the Pacific by way of the Panama Canal for her first patrol when it is believed that she was hit by aerial depth charges from friendly forces and sank off of the East Coast. May this memorial serve to honor and perpetuate the memory of the submariners who lost their lives during World War II. At the base of the memorial are the following words: In Honor of One of 52 Submarines on Eternal Patrol. |
